Course Description

This course will give you the tools, resources and activities that will help with choosing a career goal, as well as decide where you want to begin on your journey to that career goal.

You’ll do a lot of research and decision making during this course’s lesson activities, but don’t let that scare you off.  You have an obligation to yourself, and your future family, to invest the time and energy now into a decision that’s the foundation of your ongoing success and happiness.

Keep in mind that no decision is carved in stone, and you’ll possibly change your mind repeatedly as you grow older, wiser and more experienced; which is normal and should be expected.  But if you listen to your intuition now and follow a direction that speaks to you, you’ll be building your future step-by-step and each building block will fit perfectly atop the previous one.

You might not see it while it’s happening, but looking back you’ll know that all of the planning and all of the experiences that you’ve had will bring you to a place where you’re meant to be; in a career, a future, that you’ve chosen and built for yourself based on what you want and who you are.

Note: This course and its content is taken from STEP 3 of the comprehensive career development course, “Idea2Career”, so you’ll notice reference to that course throughout these lessons and activities (topics).

By the end of this course you’ll have:

  • Familiarized yourself with the diversity of careers within each of the career clusters that you’re interested in.
  • Identified careers that could be a good fit for you based on your interests, skills, and what you enjoy doing.
  • Recognized that careers have different education and training requirements that range from certifications to advanced college degrees.
  • Learned the educational requirements for the careers that most interest and motivate you.
  • Realized that a career goal doesn’t have to be all or nothing… you can work towards an ultimate career goal by way of a variety of jobs, education, and experiences that will build upon each other.
  • Discovered that committing to a career goal or pathway that is relevant and meaningful to you, and which will allow you to support yourself and your future family, is a journey of research and discovery.
  • Realized that you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you choose a career only based on the opinions of some well intentioned, but often uninformed, people in your life.

How long will this course take?

That depends on you. This course is intended to make you be introspective, or “thoughtful”, about the information you’re learning and the decisions you’re making so take your time. There’s a ton of research to be done if you intend to make your career choice one that’s meaningful, and will motivate you to do everything in your power to achieve.

That being said shoot for about 4 hours total, although it might take you a little longer or a little less. Your choice.
