Dependent or Independent Student Status. Which is it?

Determining whether or not you’re considered a dependent or independent status matters. A lot.  You might think that you should be considered independent (and therefore possibly qualify for more aid) for any number of reasons, but unfortunately that’s not how it works in many cases.

As a dependent student you’ll be required to include your parent’s personal and financial information which can be a big problem for some students; if that’s the case for you make sure that you contact the financial aid office at the school you’ll be attending to see if they can help you. Sometimes they can, sometimes not.

Either way, first thing you need to do is determine on your own what your dependency status is. You can find really detailed information about that by clicking the button below.

WHEN YOU’RE DONE:

  • Click the “MARK COMPLETE” button at the bottom of this page.
  • Do that and then head over to the next topic, FAFSA Tips for Parents.
