Get Together the Documents You'll Need

Getting the documents and information you’ll need together before you sit down to fill out the FAFSA will make your life your life so much easier.

Remember, if you’re considered a “Dependent” student you’ll need each of the items listed below for both you AND one of your parents.

  • null

    FSA ID

We went over this in the last topic “Create Your FSA ID” so you’ll find everything you need to know there.

  • null

    Social Security Number

Can’t find it? Contact the Social Security Administration to get a new or replacement.  If instead you’re an “ELIGIBLE NON-CITIZEN” then you’ll need your Alien Registration Number. Not sure if you’re eligible? Head here to find out.

  • null

    Driver's License Number

Only if you have one; if you don’t, no problem.

  • null

    Tax Returns/Records

Your tax returns, W2s and other tax forms from the year two years prior to the year you’ll be in school.  FOR EXAMPLE:  Applying for financial aid for the 2018/2019 school year?   You’ll need your tax returns and forms for 2016. May not seem logical, but it’s the way it works now.

  • null

    Non-Taxable Income

Money received that wasn’t taxed… child support payments, non-educational veterans benefits. Find specific details for Students and Parents at these links.

  • null

    Records of Assets

Assets include savings and checking account balances as well as investments like stocks, bonds and real estate (except the home where your family lives).  Not sure what to include (and NOT include)? Get more info at this link for students and parents.

  • null

    List of Schools

Include up to 10 schools on your FAFSA; even if you’re only remotely interested in a school you should include it because you can always remove it later.  Delaying adding schools now could cause you to miss out on some of the “first come first served” financial aid they offer so don’t delay! Applying to more than 10 schools? Find out what to do here.

WHEN YOU’RE DONE:

  • Click the “MARK COMPLETE” button at the bottom of this page.
  • After you do that head over to the next topic, Filling Out the FAFSA.
